News, Medical Literature, Databases: Up to Date acquired by Wolters Kluwer Health

Up to Date is a popular and very widely-used clinical database and decision support tool subscribed to by thousands of health care institutions and academic medical centers throughout the world. That is why it is considered Big News by librarians when international science-technology-medicine publisher, Wolters Kluwer announced today (Sept 4 2008 ) that an agreement has been reached to acquire Up to Date.

Following is an excerpt from a press release issued by Wolters Kluwer Health:

Up To Date collaborates with some 3,800 physician experts, who use their clinical experience and review of the latest research to create recommendations on how to diagnose and treat thousands of conditions in 13 medical specialties. Nearly 320,000 clinicians in 130 countries, thousands of patients and the majority of academic medical centers in the U.S. look to Up To Date for clinical guidance, practice guidelines, peer-reviewed articles, photographs, and X-ray illustrations. Up to Date, headquartered in Waltham, Massachusetts, has approximately 250 employees specializing in physician-driven products designed to improve health care at the point of care…

The acquisition is expected to be finalized by year-end 2008.
