News: 2007 Mercer Consulting Survey on Cost of Healthcare Plans to Employees in the U.S.

After you read the previous posting (Nov 19 2007) about volunteer clinicians and medical students treating those without health care, please read the Nov 19 2007 press release from Mercer Inc. regarding rising costs for providing health care insurance to American employees.
Following are a few excerpts from that press release:
“Total U.S. health benefit cost rose by 6.1 percent in 2007, the same pace as last year, to an average of US$7,983 per employee, according to the National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans, conducted annually by Mercer and released today...”
“There are consequences for working Americans… in the absence of a mandate to provide coverage, some small employers are simply dropping their plans, adding their employees to the growing rolls of the uninsured”
“Among employers with fewer than 200 employees, health coverage prevalence fell from 63 percent to 61 percent in 2007 – and that’s down from 66 percent five years ago”.
“The Mercer National Survey of Employer-Sponsored Health Plans is conducted using a national probability sample of public and private employers with at least 10 employees. Nearly 3,000 employers completed the survey in 2007. The survey was conducted during the late summer, when most employers have a good fix on their costs for the current year. Results represent about 600,000 employers and more than 90 million full- and part-time employees, and have an error range of +/-3 percent”.
