Great news this week! I received an official acceptance notice from the Health on the Net Foundation, a non-profit international organization based in Geneva, which was created in 1995 to assist in “standardising the reliability of medical and health information available on the World-Wide Web”. Following are several excerpts from the Health on the Net Foundation home page:
“Health On the Net Foundation is a non-governmental organization, internationally known for its’ pioneering work in the field of health information ethics, notably for the establishment of its code of ethical conduct, the HONCode, the most widely-accepted reference for online health and medical publishers…”
“Health On the Net Foundation‘s origins go back to September 7-8, 1995, when some of the world’s foremost experts on telemedicine gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, for a conference entitled “The Use of the Internet and World-Wide Web for Telematics in Health Care”… HON’s site went live some six months later. On March 20, 1996 became one of the very first URLs to guide both lay users and medical professionals to reliable sources of health care information in cyberspace”.
“Currently the HONCode is used by over 5,000 accredited websites covering 72 countries. The HON web site is visited by 27,000 visitors world-wide per day“.
Also at the HON Foundation website, is a downloadable toolbar/search engine which automatically checks whether a site providing medical or health care information is accredited by HONcode. Visit http://www.hon.ch/visitor.html to download it. Here is a screenshot of the HONcode toolbar:
On the right side of the EBM and Clinical Support Librarians@UCHC blog, the HON Code emblem is now displayed. I am grateful for the foundations’ recognition. 🙂
