The Friday Post #2: Photographic Essays… about Ruins

If you already have an account on StumbleUpon.com you know that you can find very unusual and amusing sites simply by cruising what is in their database, which is compiled by Stumble Upon users who, when they like a site, give a “thumbs up” or if they don’t like the site, give a “thumbs down”.

I’ve found many fascinating sites from the service – it is a great example of a global, shared social bookmarking/file system.

On this very snowy day in New England, following is the next Friday selection of posts:

  • Anyone out there read Russian? I apologize that I cannot. Pripyat’s Blog on LiveJournal (in Russian) shows an extensive photographic essay of a ruined city… Bravo to the blogger(s), you have created a hauntingly descriptive body of work. Following is a translation from one of the postings on this blog (January, 2008):

Announced a set wishing to participate in the visit to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and the town of Pripyat, scheduled for January 25 (Friday!) 2008.
Pripyat. That word makes each of us unique to the association. Immediately to exclude those for whom they are limited to geographical name of the river that runs through the territory of Ukraine. Recall the people for whom Pripyat – a house or a battlefield with the invisible enemy – radiation. Their associations are bitterness, frustration and pain. There are still, we, whose life has never been directly linked to the Town & Zone. But the desire not only to know the history, but also able to push its prochuvstvovat unique feat – to varying degrees overcome raging disease radiofobiyu us in touch and to the tragedy, not only a single city or country, but the entire humanity.
It is impossible to remain indifferent to the Ukrainian Polesie picturesque landscape and mysterious silence of abandoned villages. It is impossible not appalled giant monument to human carelessness – “Sarkofagu”. It is impossible not to hear the breath of Pripyat. Cities, which is already more than twenty years living alone. Who understands and takes us such people as we are. We are, going to be circulated around the world for beautiful shestnadtsatietazhki species from the roof and graffiti on its buildings, us fans game “Stalker” and simply interested in and sympathetic. City awaits us – welcomed smile schurit podslepovatye orbit windows absorb the shadow side of our homes, our prospectuses gropes hands traces. Look him in the soul. Enjoy history. Understand that for the word “you mean” Pripyat ” .

Here are two translated links to Pripyat, in the Exclusion Zone of Chernobyl: Link#1 and Link#2. (Also see comment posted below by Mark dated Feb 23 2008 who visited Chernobyl in June 2006).

    • Blogger Sweet Juniper presents a photo-essay on an abandoned school storage facility in Detroit… a book cemetary of sorts.
      • Desy is the blogger who writes 56 houses left and photographs the calculated destruction currently taking place in a (former) subdivision in Missouri. Her childhood home and hundreds of others have already been crushed by bulldozers and trucked away, as the planned expansion of the St. Louis Lambert Municipal airport took the land and houses on the basis of eminent domain. Here is what Desy wrote about her blog:

“Photographs of what little remains of Carrollton Subdivision in Bridgeton, Missouri from January to August, 2007. The subdivision was bought out by Lambert Airport in a runway expansion. Nearly 1,900 homes were bought out. This is where I grew up”.

I personally visited the Chernobyl area for two days in June 2006 with a friend and former resident of Pripyat. We toured the Chernobyl Plant (including the Reactor 4 control room), several of the abandoned villages, and Pripyat. I have posted an English-language photo essayl of my trip at:
